Many\u00a0people seem to think you can just put up a blog and start posting and traffic will flood in without any marketing or any blog \u00a0SEO (search engine optimization) whatsoever<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this is rarely ever the case.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t need to have some big-shot budget and spend money on traffic, however. As long as you\u2019re setting your blog up for success right from the beginning (or at least implementing a good SEO plan at some point) you won\u2019t need to spend any money (or much) on marketing to get traffic.<\/p>\n

For most blogs, the bulk of their traffic does come from SEO, at least at first. Sure, you may have incoming links and word of mouth marketing at some point, but in the beginning, you\u2019ll be relying on good old Google and other search engines for traffic.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be tempted to think you can use the built-in SEO features of your blog, because they aren\u2019t enough! If they were, everyone would be getting plenty of search engine traffic to their blogs, and clearly that isn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n

A lot has changed in SEO in recent years, so it\u2019s time to jump on board and ride the wave of the next generation in blog SEO.<\/p>\n

Okay, forget everything you thought you knew about SEO. Whatever you\u2019ve heard probably doesn\u2019t apply anymore, anyway. All that stuff about carefully choosing keywords and repeating them over and over\u00a0and such? That\u2019s old news. Using article marketing? Practically useless for SEO, and could even harm <\/strong>you.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a new era in SEO, and there are so many ways that used to work that can actually get you penalized now. So before we get started on the things you should do, you\u2019re going to learn things you should never<\/strong> do.<\/p>\n

Article Marketing<\/h2>\n

This is still being passed around some circles as a valid way to build links, and it\u2019s not a good idea! Hasn’t been for a long time.<\/p>\n

You could use it on a limited basis to get direct traffic from those few places that still get some organic traffic, but please don\u2019t use this for SEO purposes! This could get you penalized, because most article directories are now considered \u201clow quality\u201d sites and those links could do more harm than good.<\/p>\n

Link Building & Exchanges<\/h2>\n

No. Just\u2026 no.<\/strong> Don\u2019t do it! Never go out and randomly spam a link to your site in blog comments, on free-for-all link pages, or other potentially low quality sites. Never get a link just for the sake of having a link!<\/p>\n

And never, ever even think about doing link exchanges for the purpose of building PageRank. And especially don\u2019t think about buying them! This will do way more harm than good!<\/p>\n

The best links are organic links you get from users who genuinely like your content. These should be one way links, not exchanges! Google even likes your posts to link out to over sites now, go figure.<\/p>\n

Once upon a time, the best way to get a lot of search engine traffic was to pay for tons of cheap, low-quality content and add tons of keywords to it.<\/p>\n
