And so the seller is going to attract more customers by virtue of having a laser targeted offer.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, you\u2019ll attract more sales by focusing in on a subset of your overall market. That\u2019s why you\u2019ll want to do your market research to determine which subset to focus on to generate the most profits.<\/p>\n<p><em>Naturally,<strong> you can laser-target multiple niches. <\/strong>Let\u2019s suppose you\u2019re selling the diet guide for women over 40. You need to give your prospects a good reason to buy from you rather than from your competitors.<\/p>\n<p>The solution? You need to craft an unique selling proposition (USP). This is the succinct statement that lets prospects know how your products and business are different (and better) than the competitors\u2019 offerings in your niche.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a real-life example:<\/strong> American car manufacturer Chevrolet used the tagline, \u201cThe heartbeat of America.\u201d The idea was to stir up a bit of American pride at a time when foreign car manufacturers such as Honda and Toyota were quickly gaining market share. Basically, the USP suggested that people should buy Chevy because it\u2019s born and bred in America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another example:<\/strong> shipping company FedEx used the USP and tagline, \u201cWhen it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.\u201d This USP gave FedEx the opportunity to increase market share, because it promises quick and reliable delivery \u2013 a key selling point to business customers who needed fast shipping to compete in their marketplaces.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you want to start setting yourself apart from the competition and grabbing a bigger market share, you too need to develop a USP.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>This requires the following steps:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Research the competition<\/strong> to see what sort of USPs they\u2019re using. The whole point is to set yourself apart, so you don\u2019t want to fall into the trap of \u201cme too\u201d marketing where you become a follower rather than an industry leader.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Determine what\u2019s important to your prospects and customers.<\/strong> It does you no good to set yourself apart from your competition on a factor that your market doesn\u2019t care about. So, do your market research to find out what your market wants and needs, and then create your USP around one of these top wants\/needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>These wants and needs may include:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"\">Risk reversal (guarantees).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\">Low prices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\">High prices. (as it pertains to high quality, luxury, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\">Good or unique customer service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\">You have a particular qualification to teach some type of information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\">The product was created in a unique way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"\">Your business or product is \u201cfirst\u201d in the niche (\u201cthe original\u201d).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026 or they may be something entirely different. <strong>Your market research will help you better understand what your market wants.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"\"><strong>Create a succinct statement.<\/strong> Ideally, your audience needs to be able to absorb and understand your USP in just a second or two. That\u2019s why you need to condense your main positioning statement down to as few words as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Consider these real USPs and how they share the information in a very brief statement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFly the friendly skies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPizza delivered in 30 minutes or it\u2019s free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMountain grown coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m loving it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe drive excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo more medicine mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now it\u2019s your turn<\/strong> \u2013 do some brainstorming and research to uncover the best USP for you, and then test it with your audience.
