The 12-Point Email Checklist to Use Before You Hit Send

Email marketing is still the most effective way of connecting with your leads, encouraging them, and creating loyal customers. That is why, as a marketer, you will spend a huge amount of resources converting website traffic into email subscribers. That is why the 12-point email checklist is so important.

Now, ask yourself "Are your email campaigns that you have spent so much energy, time and money, on the verge of crashing and burning?"

They just may be tipping on the verge without you realizing, if you’re not using the following 12-point checklist before you hit send.

Think of it like this...Your email is like a plane (stay with me here).

If you use the following “preflight” checklist before you send it, that email will take flight. And you’ll get the beautiful, profitable results you’ve been planning for.

Or you can neglect this preflight checklist and watch your email campaign crash and burn like the Hindenburg disaster.

The choice is yours. So you can put these strategies to work to create awesome results for every email you send… without crashing!

12 POINT EMAIL CHECKLIST

1.

Do you understand your audience?

Don’t even think about drafting an email until you understand as much as possible about your audience. This means you need to do your market research to figure out your audience demographics, wants, needs and fears.

This is common sense, right?

You’re going to approach single men differently than you approach a new mom.

That’s why you need to know your audience, so that you can craft content that really resonates with them.

"You’re going to approach single men differently than you approach a new mom."

2.

Are you using a responsive template/design?

Chances are, many of your subscribers are going to view your email from their phones or other device (such as a tablet).

You’re going to lose them in a split second if your email doesn’t look good on their device.

That’s why you’ll want to be sure to use a responsive design that looks good no matter what your subscriber uses to view your email.

"many of your subscribers are going to view your email from their phones or other device"

3.

Did you set your goal before you started writing?

Every email you send should have a goal, and you need to decide what this goal is before you write a single word. That way, you can design your content around achieving this particular goal.

Here are some ideas of goals you might set for an email:

  • Generate a sale of your own product.
  • Get subscribers to join a mailing list.
  • Encourage readers to watch a video.
  • Get subscribers to join a webinar.
  • Generate a sale of an affiliate product.
  • Get readers to share a link/piece of content.
  • Get subscribers to read an article on your blog.
  • Get readers to join your social media pages.
  • Encourage subscribers to fill in a form (such as a quote form).
  • Get readers to join a contest.

And similar activities.  The point is, just choose ONE main goal, and then craft your email around that goal.

"Every email you send should have a goal, and you need to decide what this goal is before you write a single word."

4.

Did you craft an attention-getting subject line?

Email marketing is the highly effective digital marketing strategy and your subject line needs to be highly noticeable and effective.

It should be short, as many email clients will truncate it to around 60 characters.

It also needs to get attention. Generally, this means it should present a benefit and/or arouse curiosity.

E.G., “A weird trick for doubling your conversion rate (see inside)…”

5.

Does your opener grab your readers?

Effective marketing emails should grab the attention of your readers right from the moment they start reading.

Your email subject line gets people to open your email. And then you have just a second or so to hold your readers attention with your opener.

That’s why you need to make sure the first few lines are really gripping.

Here are different ways to capture attention:

  • Share a startling fact or statistic.
  • Tell a story.
  • Elaborate the benefits mentioned in the subject line.
  • Empathize with the reader’s problem (and/or agitate it).
  • Make a big promise.
  • Arouse curiosity about what’s coming up.

Note: in order to keep your readers’ eyes on your email, your content must be directly related to your subject. If your subscribers feel tricked, you can bet they won’t remain subscribers for long.

"Your email subject line gets people to open your email. And then you have just a second or so to hold your readers attention with your opener."

6.

Is the content useful?

Your readers will open up a few of your emails and read them. But if they’re not finding anything useful in these emails, eventually they’re going to stop opening them. And you can bet they won’t be clicking on any links.

That’s why you’ll want to make it a top priority to create useful content that your readers want.

Better yet, offer something in each email (such as a tip) that your readers can’t find anywhere else. If you offer something unique on a regular basis, your subscribers will keep opening your emails. And even better leads that learn something useful from you most often become customers who are willing to refer your business to friends, family, and colleagues

7.

Is the content entertaining?

Your emails can share the most amazing secrets your niche has ever seen – but if the email is dry and boring, no one is going to read it. That’s why you need to make sure your content is entertaining to keep and hold your reader’s attention.

Here are tips for creating more entertaining content:

  • Use a light, conversational tone. In other words, write as if you’re writing an email to a friend.
  • Sprinkle in humor where appropriate.
  • Tell stories that the reader can relate to.
  • Use metaphors, similes and analogies to spice up your writing.

"you need to make sure your content is entertaining to keep and hold your reader’s attention."

8.

Did you include a call to action?

As you know from above, every email needs a goal. Now you need to check that you’ve included a call to action (CTA) usually placed at the end of your email, that matches your goal. This is where you specifically tell your readers what you want them to do next.

Your CTA  is your best chance to motivate your leads into taking real steps toward becoming customers.

E.G., “Watch NOW It's 100% FREE!”

9.

Is this part of a series?

The next point you’ll want to check is whether you’re sending a standalone email or you’re sending an email that’s part of a series of emails.

Hint: sending an email that’s part of a series is going to deliver better results to you.

That’s due to two reasons:

People simply don’t read every email you send. So, if you send a series (with each email promoting the same thing), you’re going to get more people seeing the offer.

People rarely buy the first time they see an offer. If you send out multiple promos, then you’re going to warm up your audience and boost your conversion rates. So, put all your ducks in a row when it comes to your emails.

"put all your ducks in a row when it comes to your emails."

10.

Is your email formatted for easy readability?

If your subscribers pop open your email and see a massive wall of text, they’re going to back out of that email super fast.

No one wants to strain their eyes reading walls of text.

Here's a tip: Have your friends critique your readability. If you can watch them open the email and see how they interact, it is invaluable.

That’s why you want to make sure you use short sentences and short paragraphs. In other words, when someone opens your email, they should see plenty of white space.

"Have your friends critique your readability. If you can watch them open the email and see how they interact, it is invaluable."

11.

Did you run the email through a spam tool?

You need your emails to make it to the inbox, not the spam folder or all your hard work will be for nothing.

Many major autoresponders include a tool where you can run your email through it to check if it’s likely to get flagged as spam (and tossed into a bulk/spam folder).

In fact, run your subject lines and email's content through these tools. Be sure to use this tool to help boost your deliverability rates.

12.
